Enzo Maresca tells Mads Hermansen where he made mistake as Leicester City suffer dip

The Blackburn goal, which Sammie Szmodics scored after Hermansen’s goal-kick to Harry Winks was intercepted by Rovers’ strong press, is examined by Leicester City’s manager.

Mads Hermansen, the goalkeeper for Leicester City, will make the same error he did at Blackburn, but manager Enzo Maresca feels his team can recover more quickly the second time.

At Ewood Park, City lost when a short goal kick was blocked, and Maresca did not try to assign blame to Hermansen. He said that instead of Harry Winks, he should have passed.

Having seen Premier League sides make similar errors, Maresca is certain the mistake will be made again. Next time he wants his team to not lose confidence, as he feels they did against Blackburn.

“For the goal kick, probably because of the goal we conceded, we lost confidence,” Maresca said. “In that goal, the mistake from Mads is not because he plays. He has to play. But he has the choice.

“He should not play with Harry. He has to take a different decision. At the end, we need to learn, it’s normal.

“It’s going to happen again, no doubt. If you see Brighton two weeks ago, they concede like this. Last year with (Manchester) City, we conceded the same goal. When you want to play from the back, you have to take risks and it doesn’t matter, we keep it going.

“I think it’s a little different for us because we only started three months ago. In order for them to accept the error, they will not do it in the same manner as other teams who have been working with this concept for two or three years. It’s distinctive.

“We lost confidence throughout the entire game after giving up the goal. They are aggressive, so you probably have some doubts when you have to repeat yourself.

Mads kept playing, which is a good indication. It indicates that we are good people. Wout (Faes) and Jannik (Vestergaard) both continued. We wish to play in this way. I’m therefore thrilled with the character we displayed today, especially with the manner we handled this extremely challenging team.

Despite giving up within the opening ten minutes, City was still able to keep Blackburn to one goal. With the fewest goals against total in the division—six—they have yet to give up more than once in a single Championship game.
