DEADLINE; Wolves Championship Transfer Interest

Published

on

Wolves left it late to complete their business in the summer transfer window, sealing three signings on deadline day.  Gary O’Neil got his side in order for the 2024/25 season, welcoming eight players to Molineux to represent the club’s summer arrivals.

As well as capturing talent to bolster the squad, Wolves also saw several faces leave, with only Pedro Neto and Max Kilman exiting permanently, and six departing on loan.

One player who looked likely to leave Wolves this summer but ended up staying, was Luke Cundle.

The midfielder returned to Molineux after embarking on two loan spells over the 2023/24 campaign, representing both Plymouth Argyle and Stoke City in the Championship.

Stoke attempted to sign Cundle on loan once more this summer however, failed to get the deal over the line, seeing the 22-year-old remain under O’Neil’s guidance.

Now, it’s been reported by journalist Alan Nixon that the Potters will make another attempt to capture Cundle in the January transfer window.

Nixon reported that Steven Schumacher is ‘keen to sign’ the Wolves youngster in January after the Championship side’s failed summer attempt.

It’s claimed that Schumacher still has his eyes fixed firmly on Cundle, with the manager ready to sign the midfielder ‘at the second time of asking’.

With the window now closed, Stoke will have to wait until January to negotiate once more with Wolves, as Cundle aims to make an impact under O’Neil for the time being.

What Gary O’Neil has said about Cundle’s future

Cundle made an impression on Schumacher, as the manager coached the midfielder at both Plymouth Argyle and Stoke last season.

Over the 2023/24 campaign, the 22-year-old contributed to 15 goals in central midfield, showing his worth in the second tier of English football.

It’s essential that the Wolves ace gets sufficient game time following his impressive form over last term, with the Englishman likely to leave on loan in January, unless things drastically change

Earlier in the summer, O’Neil touched upon the midfielder’s transfer stance at Wolves, admitting that it could be ‘difficult’ for him to get a chance in the side, via Express and Star.

“His situation could still go either way, to be honest,” O’Neil explained.

“I spoke to him about the decision that he has to make, because he understands the midfielders that we have at the football club and that there may be some patience and it may be difficult for him.”

So far, Cundle hasn’t appeared for Wolves in the Premier League squad, last being in action during pre-season in the United States.

Doherty had little luck during the game. The full-back struggled against England’s attackers and failed to push the hosts further up the field.

As a result, he was hooked off the pitch just before the hour mark with fans furious with his performance.

Many supporters took to X, formerly Twitter, to vent their frustrations at the Wolves man, claiming that he was ‘woeful’ against the Three Lions.
