Club chairman speaks out on Clement regret after what he has done at Rangers

Genk chairman Peter Croonen has revealed the one regret he has over the appointment of current Rangers manager Philippe Clement.

The Belgian has been a revelation since he arrived at Ibrox in October, managing to claim victory in 22 of his 26 matches in charge and claiming the top spot in the Scottish Premiership.

Clement took the manager role at Genk between December 2017 and June 2019, winning the Belgian Pro League with the side before leaving for Club Brugge.

Speaking via Daily Record on Wednesday (21 February), Croonen admitted: “The longer Rangers can keep Phillipe the better for them. He has proven that he can repeat success over several seasons.

“The only thing that I regret about appointing him at Genk was that he left us after that first title. We asked him to stay but he decided to leave.”

The Gers looked lost during Michael Beale’s rein, especially in the league, with Celtic seemingly running away with the Scottish Premiership title.

However, the momentum has certainly swung in Rangers’ favour under Clement, with the Ibrox side now replacing the Hoops at the top of the league.

It is no wonder why Croonen is jealous of Rangers and Clement, having helped the Belgian club win their first league title since the 2010/11 season.

However, the Ibrox faithful may be worried that their current manager has never stayed in the same place as the manager for more than three years. If he can lead Rangers to multiple trophies over the next couple of campaigns, it may not matter too much, but it is not a nice thought to have.

With the potential to claim just their second league title in the last 10 years, amid Celtic’s dominance over the past decade, Rangers fans will already be hoping that Clement stays at Ibrox forever.
