Chris Sutton blasts Rangers fans as controversial Celtic footage
Chris Sutton has blasted Rangers fans who were arguing over a penalty decision awarded to Celtic in their 2-1 win over Hibernian on Wednesday (8 February).
Sutton wrote on his personal X account (7 February) as Celtic looked to respond against Hibs after Rangers moved level on points with the Hoops at the top of the Scottish Premiership after their 2-1 win over Aberdeen on 6 February.
Brendan Rodgers’ men moved three points clear again after two Adam Idah penalties and footage emerged from Sky Sports Scotland (7 February) from the game of Kyogo Furuhashi after he was judged to have been fouled by Joe Newell inside the box after VAR intervention.
And Sutton took to his X account to blast Rangers fans who feel referee Nick Walsh got the penalty decisions incorrect. He wrote: “How are people (mostly bears) even arguing about the award of this? Nick Walsh was correct on both penalties tonight.”
Celtic issue strong response after Rangers statement
How Sutton has concluded that it was mostly Rangers fans who were arguing about the penalty decisions is baffling given he doesn’t know everyone who may have complained.
It seems the former Celtic striker is feeling the pressure of Philippe Clement’s men after their huge win over Aberdeen which has certainly left the Hoops panicking as the Scottish Premiership title race heats up.
However, Celtic needed to deliver against Hibs and they did even if the performance wasn’t up to scratch. Judging by the footage from the game on Furuhashi’s incident, it seems VAR got the decision spot on but imagine the huge reaction from Sutton and Celtic fans had it not been given.
Rangers fans will have felt Celtic should have been on the end of a contentious decision themselves after they saw Dujon Sterling sent off after referee Don Robertson stuck to his onfield decision after VAR intervention when the foul was clearly a yellow, not a red.
Light Blues fans will be riled up by Sutton’s outburst on Twitter which makes this potential title race even more enjoyable.
