Bolton Wanderers Boss Complained “Angrily” About Saturday Draw Charge The Squad To Be The…

Bolton Wanderers ace comments on Wrexham style of play under Phil Parkinson – ‘not the most attractive’

Wrexham’s push for promotion to League One continues but there is a sense of frustration after drawing with Bolton Wanderers.

Phil Parkinson was looking to get Wrexham back on track as his former club Bolton Wanderers arrived at STōK Cae Ras

Wrexham were stunned by Peterborough United in the EFL Trophy as Parkinson watched his side throw away a Wembley final.

There was no time to dwell on that result though as Wrexham’s League One promotion charge was the focus again this weekend.

Wrexham couldn’t find the breakthrough in a 0-0 draw with both sides managing just one shot on target each.

Bolton Wanderers ace on Wrexham style of play

Wrexham created good openings but Sam Smith headed once down and over the bar before Tom O’Connor missed a glaring opportunity in the second half.

A point is better than nothing with Eoghan O’Connell happy to close the gap to Wycombe Wanderers to just two points.

Bolton came into the game in good form and with boss Steven Schumacher praising Wrexham’s ‘huge squad’ ahead of the game, they knew the battle ahead of them at the STōK Cae Ras.

The Trotters stood firm and grabbed a point and a clean sheet, much to the delight of defender Will Forrester.

Speaking to The Bolton News, Forrester noted that Bolton ‘defended really well’ against an ‘effective’ Wrexham side

Forrester feels that Wrexham’s style of play is ‘not the most attractive’ brand of football with the defender feeling that Bolton were dragged into a real battle.

Forrester believes that Bolton would prefer to play more flowing football Wrexham ‘make it hard’ to play that way.

“Obviously, we’ve struggled to keep a lot of clean sheets this season but I think over the last few weeks, although we’ve conceded goals, I think the whole defence has been really good,” said Forrester.

“We haven’t given away many chances at all but we’ve just been unlucky with the goals that have gone in. But today, I thought we defended really well because they’re a good team, they’re effective at what they do.

“It’s not the most attractive football, but they drag you into that game and put lots of balls in the box. We had to defend them well today and I thought we did that. They make it hard. We got sucked into their game where we couldn’t have much of the ball, which is obviously what we like to do.

“But we dug deep, matched their physicality and came away with a clean sheet which is a massive boost for us,” he added

Phil Parkinson’s brand has produced results for Wrexham

Wrexham fans know that the style of play isn’t always great on the eye but we have also seen some great Wrexham goals this season.

Parkinson has copped some criticism of late with some supporters frustrated at the lack of attacking fluency.

One shot on target on Saturday won’t exactly quieten that criticism despite an improved all-round performance.

Parkinson’s style may not always be enthralling but Wrexham have achieved results under him, losing just 36 times in 208 games.

There may well be a time when Wrexham want to make a change and bring in somebody with a more attractive style of play.

For now though, Parkinson will be confident that his style can bring more results for Wrexham – especially with another promotion on the line.
