Birmingham City’s Boss States That “Difficult” Decisions Are Having To Be Made, What Does This Mean?

BIRMINGHAM CITY SQUAD TRIMMING SHOWS THE RUTHLESS SIDE OF CHRIS DAVIES

Chris Davies wants a big, competitive squad at Birmingham City, but he doesn’t intend to keep anyone for the sake of it.

With a week to go of the summer transfer window, Blues are fine-tuning their squad and players are being cut. Davies is already carrying more than the 18-man match day squad League One will allow, meaning difficult decisions are having to be made.

A glum Tyler Roberts sat behind Blues’ bench at Wycombe Wanderers last week after being told by Davies that he was the 19th man for the second time this season. Roberts won’t be the only player to face that reality.

Managing the frustrations of those who miss out is already shaping up to be one of Davies’ biggest jobs. “It would suit us a lot better if it was a 20-man squad, obviously, because it would give us more options on the bench,” Davies said.

“But some players will miss out and it’s my job to explain to them that it’s not the end of the world. If they do miss out on a squad, they could well be playing or having a huge contribution in the following game a few days later. Keeping the motivation level high and seeing the bigger picture is going to be important for the players.”

Blues still want to add to their squad in the remainder of the transfer window but getting bodies out of the building is arguably more pressing. Davies acknowledged that in his press conference on Thursday.

The likes of George Hall and Romelle Donovan haven’t been involved and could depart. Davies would rather players play elsewhere if the right opportunity presents itself. His first team squad (see it below) currently consists of 23 players and up to three more could be signed.

Blues will play at least 52 matches in 2024/25 and that figure could exceed 60 if they progress in cup competitions. Everyone still here come September has a role to play in the eyes of Davies. Those who don’t will depart.
