3 centre-backs Birmingham City must eye as transfer desire emerges

Birmingham City have enjoyed a statement summer transfer window but the club aren’t done with incomings just yet.

Birmingham City have had a transfer window like League One has not seen before. The Blues have spent in a big way in their bid to return to the Championship at the first time of asking.

The first two games have shown Chris Davies and co that this will be no easy task though. They were held to a draw by Reading on the opening day before just scraping past Wycombe Wanderers at the weekend.

Despite their big-spending though, more players are wanted. Additional depth up top, in midfield and at centre-back is reportedly desired.

With that said, we put forward three central defenders Birmingham City should target to join Christoph Klarer, Krystian Bielik and Dion Sanderson as options at the heart of defence…

Ibane Bowat – Fulham

After a successful year in Austria with TSV Hartberg, Bowat is back at Fulham and could move on a permanent basis. Links with a £500,000 move to Aberdeen have circulated but that deal has not been done.

At that price, he should be well within the reaches of Birmingham City.

21-year-old Bowat is a promising and powerful centre-back with a bright future and he could be a great asset for the Blues for the present and future. If another defender is wanted, he’s definitely one for former Tottenham Hotspur no. 2 Davies to consider.

Nigel Lonwijk – Wolves

If Birmingham City would like a player with a bit of experience at this level, Wolves’ Dutch defender Lonwijk could be an intriguing option to consider at the back.

He’s gained experience in two League One loans with Wycombe Wanderers and Plymouth Argyle, winning the league title with the latter. The 21-year-old, who is out of contract next year, also played 22 times in the Eredivisie with Fortuna Sittard.

Lonwijk is a solid player on the ball and like Bowat, his best days are ahead of him. It’s hard to see Wolves being against a sale, and a deal shouldn’t break the bank at St. Andrew’s.

Maxwell Gyamfi – VfL Osnabruck

Last but not least, if Birmingham City want to turn to the European market again, they would be wise to raid relegated VfL Osnabruck for standout defender Maxwell Gyamfi.

Again, Gyamfi is out of contract next summer and after performing well in 2. Bundesliga, he deserves to play at a higher level than the German third-tier. League One is a more competitive league and in the Blues, he would be heading to a far more ambitions side.

Gyamfi could be another shrewd signing from the German market as his deal winds down.
