Birmingham City lining up new bid for £3.4m powerhouse, former captain nearing exit door

Blues are reportedly planning to submit a new bid for Hannover 96 centre-back Phil Neumann this winter following a failed approach in the summer.

Chris Davies has been delighted with the progress shown this season but he wants to bolster his central defensive options well ahead of the expected return to the Championship. Neumann, a very pacy yet tall figure, is an option highly thought of by Birmingham’s manager.

Neumann has been a powerhouse for German second-tier club Hannover ever since signing from Holstein Keil in 2022, making 76 appearances in his two and a half years to date. Capable of playing at centre-half, right-back or even defensive midfield, the 27-year-old could offer Blues great versatility.

reports Birmingham are preparing an improved offer for Neumann after seeing a £3.4 million bid rejected in the summer. It’s claimed Blues are expected to continue their free spending despite already becoming League One title favourites with a revamped squad.

Neumann bid could mean bad news for former Blues captain

If Neumann does arrive through the doors at St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park this January, it could spell the end for Dion Sanderson. The ex-skipper has already fallen to fourth in the centre-back pecking order and he’d only become more dispensable if he dropped to fifth

Davies’ preference is new captain Krystian Bielik alongside Christoph Klarer, while Rangers loanee Ben Davies has been filling in during Bielik’s injury absence. Sanderson has played just 328 minutes across all competitions this term and his game time will only decrease further if Neumann is signed.
