Ben Foster is absolutely not buying what Wolves talisman That… Matheus Cunha said recently
Wolves are gearing up to face Fulham in the Premier League tonight and Matheus Cunha stands to play a key role once again.
Wanderers head into the game full of confidence after a big win over Bournemouth that sent the club five points clear of the relegation zone.
Vitor Pereira’s work is now starting to shape at Molineux, and fans have been enjoying some improved performance over the last few weeks.
The team looks in a much better way, and it has been especially refreshing to see Wolves defending much better of late.
If Wolves can continue to keep things tight at the back, one would imagine the rest will take care of itself
Because the attacking quality of this team is not in doubt, especially with Matheus Cunha around.
It was so important that Wolves kept Cunha beyond the January transfer window.
But former Premier League goalkeeper Ben Foster is in doubt he’ll be leaving in the summer, and doubted some recent comments from the Brazilian.
Ben Foster doubts Matheus Cunha’s claim that he never thought about leaving Wolves in January
There was a point in January when it looked as though Cunha might actually have left.
There was no movement over him signing a new contract as had been mooted, and speculation really started to pick up about clubs potentially coming in with late bids.
Nottingham Forest were reportedly ready to bid for Cunha.
In the end though, he stayed put and did sign that contract extension. And the new contract for Cunha features a £62.5 million release clause.
Cunha recently claimed he never thought of leaving Wolves mid-season, but Foster wasn’t having any of it.
Speaking in a new video on his Ben Foster – The Cycling GK YouTube channel, he said: “I saw a nice little Instagram post he put out or tweet or whatever it was saying ‘I never had any thoughts about leaving this football club I love it so much’.
“Except for that release clause that I’ve got put into it and when somebody pays it in the summer, I will be gone. But other than that I had no thoughts about leaving this football club.
“Fantastic player, he deserves his move and he will get his move. But I just thought ‘Come on mate, we’re not stupid’.”
Foster is half-right about Cunha
Foster wasn’t having a go at Cunha, he was more just expressing his skepticism about his comments.
To doubt Cunha’s claim about him never thinking about leaving Wolves in January is slightly harsh.
However, given that release clause, it is clear that Cunha has been keen to ensure he does have a route out of the club this summer.
It is very hard to see that clause not being triggered by someone in the next window.
Cunha’s love for Wolves is not in doubt. But he’s made sure that he isn’t tied to Molineux. But fans cannot really blame him for that, given how good a player he is.
