BBC Sportscene pundit shares Oscar Cortes verdict as Rangers footage aired

Oscar Cortes was “excellent” for Rangers against Ayr United as he continues his “impressive” start to life in Glasgow, according to Kenny Miller.

Rangers claimed a 2-0 victory over Ayr United at Ibrox in the fifth round of the Scottish Cup on Saturday 10 February.

Cortes made his first start for the Gers since arriving on loan from Lens on deadline day, and Miller was full of praise for the 20-year-old.

Speaking on BBC Sportscene (10 February), the former Rangers striker said, “I thought he was excellent, his first couple of cameo appearances have been pretty impressive and he is another good option to have on that left flank.

“He is direct, he has got really good feet and he was unfortunate not to get a goal today. He has got the ability to play one-on-one and he has got a good composure about him as well.

“I think the early signs in his Rangers career have been really positive.”

Rangers could have a star on their hands

It is hard to disagree with Miller’s assessment of Cortes’ performance, and Philippe Clement will be delighted by the addition of the Colombia international.

His first start brought with it his first assist for the club, and now that he is off the mark in terms of goal contributions in Scotland, he will be looking to push on at Ibrox.

He is still only 20 years old, and considering the fact that the Gers have the option to make his transfer permanent in the summer, this move could be viewed as very shrewd business in the years to come.

Clement will be delighted with Cortes’ start at Rangers.

After so many of the summer arrivals at the club failed to hit the ground running, it will be refreshing for Rangers supporters to see a new recruit take to life in the Scottish Premiership so well.

The task for Cortes now will be to begin making the same level of impact in league competition.
