Aryna Sabalenka will want to smash the windows in Jelena Ostapenko’s new Porsche after failing to win the Stuttgart Open again on Monday, despite a smashing victory for the Latvian.

Sabalenka had previously won their lone clay match in 2024, with a 3-0 head-to-head advantage. She won 6-2, 6-4 in Rome last year, and the result was fairly similar this time, but in Ostapenko’s benefit.

Sabalenka has reached the final in Stuttgart three times between 2021 and 2023 and has lost each time. She begged to finally win the Porsche yesterday but it seems her prayers weren’t to be answered.

It was perhaps no shock in terms of the lack of game time for Sabalenka who has only played three games this week having had a late start due to Potapova’s withdrawal and Good Friday. While Ostapenko has played all week beating Liudmila Samsonova, Emma Navarro and of course Iga Swiatek who she extended her Head-to-Head record against to 6-0.
She also saw off Ekaterina Alexandrova who she has had a protracted rivalry with other the years so another box ticked. Flying out the traps, she eased into a 3-1 lead breaking serve straight away and could’ve gone into a 5-2 lead. Sabalenka had to stave off three break points. Then she look to have the ascendancy as she broke for 4-4 only for the momentum to flip reverse as Ostapenko claimed it 5-4 then held serve finally for 6-4.

The second set, on the other hand, was a crushing rout, with Sabalenka being broken every time she served, and fairly comfortably, as Ostapenko increased the pressure and cruised to victory. She only lost two points on serve throughout the set, as Ostapenko promptly sealed it up.

It is his sixth career title and first on clay since Roland Garros in 2017. A long time coming, and a Porsche seems fitting for the renowned Latvian.
