Another Fresh “Dilemma” At Birmingham City After A Shocking Defeat Away
The Bielik Conundrum: Birmingham City’s Krystian Dilemma
Krystian Bielik’s journey with Birmingham City has been anything but ordinary. It’s a story of loyalty, grit and, as this season seems to suggest, a puzzling impact on the team’s fortunes. For a player with his pedigree – a Polish international, experienced across the English football pyramid – his relationship with the Blues is layered with promise and paradox.
From Arsenal to St. Andrew’s: A Love Story Rekindled
Bielik first arrived at Birmingham in January 2017, on loan from Arsenal. Just 19 at the time, the towering defender gave fans glimpses of his potential during 10 appearances in a rollercoaster of a campaign. Fast-forward to the 2022–23 season, and Bielik was back at St. Andrew’s, this time on loan from Derby County. At this point, he had been transitioned into a holding midfielder, still playing games and centre-half but playing mostly as a defensive midfielder. His 35 appearances that season were solid, if unspectacular, but enough to convince the club that he was worth a permanent deal.
In July 2023, amid rumors of interest from elsewhere, Bielik signed a three-year contract with Birmingham. It was a coup for the club, signaling intent as they plotted their climb back up the football ladder. For Bielik, it was a return to familiar surroundings and a chance to solidify his place in the hearts of the Blues faithful.
The 2024–25 Campaign: A Season of Contradictions
The current season has brought an intriguing subplot to Bielik’s Birmingham story. Deployed back at center-back, Bielik has been at the heart of the action – but not always for the better. A tally of results, meticulously compiled, paints a fascinating picture of the team’s fortunes with and without him. The Kapitan has played 13 games in all competitions for Blues this campaign, and the outcomes of those games are not as one would hope.
When Bielik has started, Birmingham have managed five wins, alongside three losses and two draws. However, notably, the wins include a chaotic game where the team salvaged a win with a Scott Wright extra time winner, another win despite going down to 10 men when Bielik lost his head in the Wrexham game and another where Bielik himself scored an own goal. One of the draws also was only salvaged by a 87th minute penalty in the opening game of the season. Goals conceded? A worrying 12 – more than a goal a game. Clean sheets? One.
Now, is that the tale of Blues’ season so far? Contrast that with the team’s record when Bielik isn’t starting, Birmingham have been very good, racking up seven wins and one draw. They’ve conceded just three goals in those matches as well as accruing 4 clean sheets.
The numbers don’t just tell a story – they shout it from the rooftops. Without Bielik, the Blues are not just good; they’re unrecognisably better
