Jessica Pegula had no remorse about stealing Aryna Sabalenka’s drink in a viral Miami Open incident, where the world No. 4 humorously indicated that she needed to “take something” from the Belarusian after losing yet another final to the same opponent.

On Saturday, the American tennis star fell short in her bid to secure the Miami title staying home after the world No. 1 handed her a 7-5 6-2 defeat in the final. The home favorite was also beaten by the Belarusian in last year’s Cincinnati and US Open finals.

Sabalenka was on Tennis Channel live after the Miami final, and she was holding her signature Marg-Aryna when Pegula sneaked behind her, took a taste, and ran away with the cocktail. The 26-year-old was left chuckling, but she was also promptly served another drink.

Pegula: Sabalenka is goofy; I felt it would be appropriate to do something like that… The drink wasn’t bad.

After smashing world No. 215 Iryna Shymanovich in her first clay match of the year, the world No. 4 returned to the Tennis Channel desk. It came as no surprise that she was asked about the weekend’s viral moment.

“I had to take something from her. She’s taken three first-place trophies from me like come on. I can take her Margarita. Enough of her girl chunky, her Margarita, winning every match like common. This is ridiculous. But I know she’s also very outgoing and goofy, so I thought like it fit the moment,” Pegula said.

The Miami runner-up also remarked that the drink was quite tasty.

“Wasn’t bad, had a nice tahini salt rim, that was nice, I enjoyed that,” Pegula cheekily said.
