Alan Shearer on Arsenal statement on Newcastle United controversy
Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal controversially lost against Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United at St. James’ Park in the Premier League this past weekend.
In the 64th minute of the Premier League encounter, Anthony Gordon scored the game’s lone goal.
Arsenal’s hopes of winning the Premier League title against Manchester City have been severely harmed by the outcome at St. James’ Park, even though it has improved Newcastle’s chances of being among the top four teams this season.
Gordon’s objective generated a lot of debate.
VAR had to verify if the ball was offside, if there was a foul, and if it had fallen out of play.
When Kai Havertz avoided a red card for a challenge on Sean Longstaff in the first half, Newcastle was not pleased.
Bruno Guimaraes, a midfielder for Newcastle, elbowed Jorginho, and Arsenal believed he ought to have been sent off.
The former England international striker made the comments while criticising Arsenal for releasing the statement in the first place.
Shearer said: “When I read Arsenal’s statement today, I didn’t hear them mention that Kai Havertz didn’t get sent off and perhaps should have. In my opinion, it should have been a red card.”
