Birmingham City could be without seven players for Shrewsbury clash
The latest Birmingham City injury news as the club prepares for the end-of-season run-in, starting with Shrewsbury Town at St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park on Saturday
Chris Davies has landed every manager’s worst nightmare after key Birmingham City midfielder Paik Seung-ho suffered an injury on international duty with South Korea.
Paik isn’t the only Blues player who was sent home early either. Star striker Jay Stansfield reported an issue to England under-21s’ staff and returned to Blues early last week to be assessed.
Ethan Laird and Taylor Gardner-Hickman should come into contention after the international break. Here is the latest on the injury front before Shrewsbury…
Paik Seung-ho
Injury: Hamstring
Paik sustained an injury to his left hamstring in the first half of South Korea’s 1-1 draw with Oman on Thursday, March 20 and had to be substituted. The midfielder was able to walk off the pitch and went to hospital for further tests.
Jay Stansfield
Injury: Unspecified
Stansfield wasn’t able to take part in England under-21s’ matches with France and Portugal and will now be assessed ahead of the game against Shrewsbury this weekend. Davies is due to hold his press conference on Friday afternoon and Stansfield’s fitness will be a hot topic.
An FA statement said: “Sunderland defender Dennis Cirkin, Birmingham City striker Jay Stansfield, and Borussia Dortmund forward Jamie Gittens will play no part in the upcoming fixtures and will remain with their clubs for further assessment.”
Taylor Gardner-Hickman
Injury: Unspecified
Gardner-Hickman has been a fixture in Blues’ line-up recently but reported an injury to the club’s medical department after the 1-0 victory over Lincoln on March 8. The midfielder should come back into contention before the Vertu Trophy final on April 13.
Davies said: “Taylor is a few weeks, but I can’t give anything too definitive on it,” Davies added. He won’t be there tomorrow, hopefully he can have a good couple of weeks rehab.”
Ethan Laird
Injury: Hamstring
Laird’s body has held up impressively this season but the right-back succumbed to a hamstring injury in the Wycombe win (March 1). He pulled up when chasing back in the 82nd minute and has missed the last four matches.
Laird is in line to return after the international break. “Ethan is very close,” Davies said (March 14). “With him it’s just a case of making sure he’s ready to go and using the international break to get him up to speed.”
Scott Wright
Injury: Knee
Wright has undergone surgery on the knee injury he sustained at Reading on February 22 and Davies has ruled him out until the latter part of 2025.
“He’s had his surgery and his early rehab has gone well,” said Davies. “I don’t know a definitive timeframe, I know he’s had that knee done before as well so I think that extends it slightly.
“These days it’s six or seven months but I think it will be a bit longer because of the background to that knee. It’s going to be right towards the end of the year I would say.”
Lyndon Dykes
Injury: Calf
Dykes pulled up on the run during Blues’ 0-0 draw with Reading and hobbled off the field. The Scotland international appeared to be in a lot of discomfort and isn’t likely to be fit for the Vertu Trophy final at Wembley on April 13.
Davies said (February 25): “Hopefully we can see him before the end of this season. I would call it a medium term injury, not a quick turnaround but there’s definitely a route back for him to get back before the end of this season and contribute. We’ll miss him.
“I don’t know whether the cup final might come too soon. I’m not qualified to give that definitive answer but it sounds like the cup final might come too soon. Even after the cup final, there’s probably five league games so can he get back and help us in that period would be the question.”
Dykes is confined to the gym at Blues’ training ground and is still wearing a protective boot.
Lee Buchanan
Injury: Knee
Buchanan suffered a serious knee injury during the draw with Blackpool and will miss the remainder of the season. Davies said: “Lee’s injury is quite severe as everyone would have guessed. He will be out for a considerable amount of time, as you probably saw from the pictures, and he won’t be with us for this season absolutely.”
The left-back is back on his feet at Blues’ training ground and in the early stages of his rehab.
