No loyalty’- £10m star lifts lid on Wolves exit as brutal manager conversation revealed

A former Wolves defender has explained the circumstances of his departure

Former Wolverhampton Wanderers full back Barry Douglas left the club to join Leeds United in 2018 and he has recently lifted the lid on the circumstances surrounding his departure from the Molineux Stadium.

Douglas felt that he was forced out of the club by then-manager Nuno Espirito Santo after the current Nottingham Forest boss allegedly told him he would ‘not be included’ in the squad for their 2018-19 Premier League campaign. Nevertheless, Douglas feels no ill will towards Santo, saying it was ‘just business’.

Douglas only spent a single season playing for Wolves, but managed to leave a lasting impression with the fanbase nonetheless. In total, he made 39 league appearances for Wolves, scoring five goals along the way as they won the Championship title and with it promotion

Speaking on the Under the Cosh podcast, he said: “I’m all for rising to the challenge to compete with someone, it’s the opportunity I want. He said [Nuno] ‘we are going to bring someone in; selling you is going to help fund bringing someone inand we are going to go with him and one young guy; if you stay, you won’t be included’. He said, ‘it’s nothing personal, it’s just business’.

I was big and ugly enough to go it can go one of two ways. I can fall out and feel sorry but I just kind of got on with it and got to enjoy something new. At that moment, it changed a wee bit for me because I saw that there is no loyalty in football whatsoever, it is just business at the end of the day.”

Douglas joined Leeds for £3m and helped the club earn promotion to the Premier League as they won the Championship title during the 2019-20 season. Outside of Wolves, Douglas has played for clubs such as Dundee United, Queen’s Park and Lech Poznan. He has also made a single appearance on the international stage for his native Scotland, winning his one and only cap in 2018. Currently, he plays for St. Johnstone in the Scottish Premiership

He joined St Johnstone back in mid-October after spending a few months as a free agent – upon signing for the Scottish club he said: “It is an exciting time. I am looking forward to the opportunity to come in and try to help the guys develop. There is a project here. It is a bit of a transition period with the new manager coming in

“I had a look and it is quite a young squad, so I can definitely bring my quality and experience to help everyone develop both on and off the park. The hunger is still there, the drive is still there and that is why I am so excited to be here playing my football.”

Since his move to Scotland, he has played in two games for St Johnstone – coming off the bench against St Mirren in a 3-1 defeat and playing the full game last weekend in a 2-1 loss to Hearts.
