Taiwo Awoniyi to miss Nottingham Forest pre-season trip to Spain

This could be of huge detriment to Nuno Espirito Santo and his Forest plans ahead of the new season – but it would appear that it can’t be helped.

Awoniyi will remain in Nottingham whilst his teammates get put through their paces in Spain, with John Percy claiming that the striker has a personal issue to attend to.

The reputable Midlands-based journalist has dismissed any notion that Awoniyi has picked up another injury – which is at least good news.

He said on X: “#nffc are set to complete the signing of Fiorentina defender Nikola Milenkovic. Medical later today. Forest’s squad for Spain training camp will not include Taiwo Awoniyi, who is taking time away regarding a personal family matter. Not injury-related.”

Awoniyi suffered a number of problems with his groin last season and he managed just 23 appearances for Forest, scoring six goals.

The 26-year-old will want to hit the ground running this season and hopefully, all is well with Awoniyi and he can return as quickly as possible.

It’s important to respect Awoniyi amid some personal issues, however, and the fan base will be rooting for him to return once everything is sorted away from the pitch

The venture will also see the B-Team go along with the first team and they will face Bournemouth’s under-21 outfit, Real Murcia’s B-Team and Club Deportiva Minera.

It looks set to be a fruitful trip but one man is going to miss out with some news being

Forest need new striker to ease burden on Awoniyi

It’s hard not to have some sympathy for Awoniyi who signed for Forest from Union Berlin for a fee of around £18 million.

Since he signed he’s been tasked with playing week in and week out and eventually, it was always going to take its toll on his fitness.

Thankfully, Chris Wood stepped up last season, scoring 15 goals in all competitions, but at 32 he might not be able to continue that sort of form for much longer.

With that in mind, perhaps Forest need to position themselves in the market this summer to land another striker.

Chuba Akpom has been linked to Forest and someone to take the burden away from Awoniyi and Wood at certain stages of the season would be useful.

Any notion that Forest should just sell Awoniyi is frankly laughable.

He’s scored 17 goals in 53 outings for the club and for a player who is still adjusting to life in the Premier League, that’s not a bad return.

Right now, Awoniyi needs the backing of the supporters and hopefully, this is nothing too serious.
