Everton have already been hit with a points deduction this season and now Forest will hope they are within the parameters to avoid the same sanction.
Maguire delivers worrying Forest verdict
The football finance expert is so often the voice of reason with football club matters. Now, he’s had his say on the Forest situation as the club falls under scrutiny.
In a report from The Times, Maguire said: “Nottingham Forest were very much at the limit of their Financial Fair Play allowance when they were promoted to the Premier League and that investment in new players continued in their first season when they signed players on high wages, including some such as Jesse Lingard who didn’t work out.
“If you are looking for clubs close to the limit they would be at the top in my opinion.”
Later last night, Maguire did reply to a fan on X, suggesting that the comments were his opinion but refuted any suggestion that Forest had actually failed.
He added: “The Times asked me which club was closest to the limit and based on Forest only being able to lose £61 million over three years and their spending last season they don’t have a lot of wiggle room. Not the same as saying they have breached the limit though.”
Forest now face anxious wait
It’s been claimed by The Telegraph that Forest have now hired top sports lawyer Nick De Marco to fight their ongoing case against Financial Fair Play.
He was the man who got Harry Toffolo off without a suspension for some betting chargers earlier in his career when they came to light during the summer.
Maguire will have left Forest fans somewhat anxious, however. He’s a man with his finger firmly on the pulse of football and now an anxious wait is on the horizon for the Reds fan base.
On the back of these claims, it’s perhaps a good thing that Nuno Espirito Santo wants to streamline the squad going forward.
Forest have to start prioritising quality over quantity and hopefully, this can give the club the kick up the backside it needs on the recruitment side of things.
