Nottingham Forest
£20m player must be gutted
Nottingham Forest promotion-winner Djed Spence must be seriously gutted that he chose not to join the club permanently in 2022.
The player is now set to join Genoa on loan after Leeds terminated their agreement after just seven games at Elland Road.
Things have gone so wrong for Spence since he signed for Tottenham and we’ve looked at why he must be regretting his decision to sign for them…
Spence must be regretting decision to snub Forest
It was all going so well for Spence at Forest. He had revived his career and stuck a firm two fingers in the direction of Neil Warnock who binned him at Middlesbrough.
However, Spence seemingly had his head turned by Tottenham and despite helping Forest to the Premier League, he didn’t sign permanently.
Moving to Spurs always felt a curious one for Spence.
Although he was sublime for Forest in the Championship, he’d never played football in the Premier League before.
Spence was always going to find it tricky to get in the team under Antonio Conte and he hinted early on that he was one for the future.
The youngster has made just six fleeting appearances for Spurs – including one against Forest last season – but finished the season on loan at Rennes.
Now, he’s going to sign for Genoa and things could have been so much different for Spence at Forest.
Cooper was great for Spence and he must hold serious regrets
It seemed for all the world that Spence would sign for Forest following promotion to the Premier League.
He made 50 appearances for the Reds during the promotion-winning campaign and linked up brilliantly with Brennan Johnson.
Spence scored three goals and claimed five assists for Forest and had he been interested, the club would have surely made a bid.
Sometimes footballers have to think with a little bit of logic and not merely consider the bulge of their wallet!
Spence – as a young lad – is now on a contract worth around £47,000-a-week at Tottenham and it’s hard to knock him for wanting to take that sort of deal.
However, it’s not as though he wouldn’t have been paid handsomely at Forest and he’d have been a mainstay in the Premier League last season.
Spence will get the chance to play in Serie A for half of the season now and that is hardly a nightmare ordeal.
Things should have been so much different though and Spence must seriously be regretting not trying harder to make a permanent Forest switch happen in 2022.
