Newcastle United Bad News as Matt Targett taken off injured after 90 seconds v Manchester United
Newcastle United were dealt yet ANOTHER injury blow after just 90 seconds at Old Trafford in their Carabao Cup tie against Manchester United as Matt Targett picked up a hamstring injury. The Magpies had already been forced into making eight changes to the side that drew 2-2 at Wolverhampton Wanderers just three days ago.
But just as their encounter with the Red Devils was settling down, Eddie Howe and his backroom staff had to rejig things once more. Targett had started the match at left-back and went down with a problem after stretching for a ball in only the second minute against the Red Devils. And it quickly became obvious that Targett had picked up a hamstring injury as he clutched the back of his leg.
The expression on Howe’s face suggested he knew instantly he’d have to make a change and Miguel Almiron was summoned from the bench with Bruno Guimaraes to warm up. After a hasty warm up, Almiron then replaced Targett and United had to reshuffled their team.
It meant that Lewis Hall dropped back to left-back after starting midfield and Almiron played on the left side of Howe’s attack. Before the game Howe had said: “It’s an opportunity for players who have been really wanting to play to come in and show how good they are.”
However, the Toon head coach was soon ripping up his plans and rejigging the side with Targett heading back to the dressing room after getting a rare start.
