Eddie Howe’s side unfortunately started 2024 with a 4-2 defeat, losing against Premier League leaders Liverpool to extend their rotten run of form at Anfield.

It was a miserable night on Merseyside, as the Toon Army made the difficult journey on a Monday night on a bank holiday. They did not witness a great performance, as Newcastle were convincingly beaten by Liverpool.

There were a couple of contentious decision – most notably the Diogo Jota dive – that enraged Newcastle supporters, but Howe’s side simply were not good enough to get anything out of the game.

It is yet another defeat on the road this season, with Newcastle only winning two games away from St James’ Park in all competitions so far. Their away record is absolutely appalling, which is concerning when you remember what our next fixture is.

Toon co-owner Mehrdad Ghodoussi was also in attendance at Anfield, watching on as Newcastle kicked off the new year with a loss. It comes at a time when the media are trying to pile pressure onto Howe, but he still has the full backing of the owners.

That will apparently be the case no matter what happens in January, which started with a 4-2 defeat to title challengers Liverpool.

It was a disappointing night, and Ghodoussi has now delivered a message to the fans who made the journey to Anfield to support the team.

He wrote on X: “Cold and wet night, but the support was unwavering. Thank you.”

Next up for travelling Newcastle fans is Sunderland in the FA Cup

The travelling Newcastle fans have nothing to show for their trip to Anfield, and that must not be the case when they hit the road again on Saturday
