‘Massive’ Newcastle star now set to leave this summer,
A number of players were linked with a move away from Newcastle United during the January transfer window.
With the club unable to sign anyone during that period due to FFP restrictions, stories largely centred about potential exits at Newcastle.
Kieran Trippier reportedly agreed a move to Bayern Munich, while Saudi interest emerged in Miguel Almiron. Callum Wilson, meanwhile, was touted as something of a surprise target for both AC Milan and Atletico Madrid.
Clearly, none of those actually ended up leaving but that has not ruled out the rumours. Wilson’s exit has been predicted this summer and now more insight has emerged.
Newcastle transfer news: Callum Wilson latest
According to journalist Joel Bland on X (formerly Twitter), tensions have risen in regard to Wilson’s situation on Tyneside, with the striker having been keen on a move to Atletico in January.
Saudi clubs are also thought to be keen on the 32-year-old, who would reportedly have to take a pay-cut and accept being third choice if he were to stay at Newcastle.
Callum Wilson transfer news: Newcastle should sell striker
Wilson has been an excellent signing for Newcastle. A £20m transfer fee has yielded 46 goals and 11 assists, many of which were registered during a bleak period for the club in which they were fighting relegation under Steve Bruce.
Hailed as “massive” by Eddie Howe, his contribution to the cause (when fit) simply can’t be questioned.
However, things have moved on since. Fellow star striker Alexander Isak is seen as one of the squad’s prized assets and they reportedly want to sign a new forward this summer.
With Wilson’s current pectoral injury keeping him out the latest in a long list of aliments since his move from Bournemouth, the sheer number of absences he’s had cannot be ignored.
If a compelling offer were to emerge, it would be very wise to take.
