Malo Gusto compares Thiago Silva to his father ahead of Chelsea vs Newcastle

Malo Gusto has labelled Thiago Silva a “legend” with the Chelsea defender looking increasingly likely to leave the club at the end of the season.

The 39-year-old Brazilian sees his contract at Stamford Bridge expire in the summer and there have been no talks as of yet between the player and club over an extension. Silva has been with the Blues since signing on a free transfer almost four years ago and has been a revelation in west London.

Ever since, Silva has been signing one-year extensions to keep him with the club but there is no clear sign that he will do the same this time around. His teammates, though, are absolutely full of admiration for what he has achieved in the game and what he can still offer Chelsea, even as he approaches 40.

“He is a legend,” Gusto said of Silva in a simple four-word verdict to Chelsea’s official website. “He is like my dad! He has helped the team a lot because he has very good experience – a lot of football in great competitions. It’s a pleasure to play with him at Chelsea.

“When I make a mistake, he tells me like my dad but that has helped me a lot. He helps with the small details and I think football is about the small details.

“At a good team like Chelsea, you have to speak a lot and that is what he has tried to tell me, Axe [Disasi], [Ben] Chilwell and Levi [Colwill] as well. He has tried to push us and he does this really well.”

Mauricio Pochettino has often been quizzed on Silva and his future at Chelsea but he is adamant the decision remains with the player and the club, hinting he is powerless in the process. Silva, speaking after the Carabao Cup semi-final second-leg victory over Middlesbrough at the end of January, admitted that his future is “almost over”.

“We know it’s almost over, but it’s not the end yet,” the Brazilian explained. “Now, the future belongs to God. Let’s finish well here, these four months and see what happens going forward, but I am super relaxed about that.”

Responding to those comments, Pochettino said: “I didn’t hear what he said after the game. We didn’t talk about the next season. Because I didn’t hear, I don’t know what I can say about that. Only he knows and the club if it’s going to be his last season or not.

“I think always we talk about the present. It’s important for him to keep fit. With his age, he is doing fantastic. We are so happy with him. What is going to happen in the future, that’s for him.”

Silva had offers to leave Chelsea in the summer of 2023, but decided to remain at Stamford Bridge. football.london understands multiple clubs from Saudi Arabia enquired about the defender, while teams from Brazil also showed a keen interest in his services.
