Birmingham boss shows true feelings with Jay Stansfield comments after Wrexham win

Birmingham manager Chris Davies was full of praise for Jay Stansfield’s double strike, which propelled the Blues to a 3-1 comeback victory against table-toppers Wrexham.

The match, with its star-studded attention thanks to minority owner and NFL legend Tom Brady cheering on Birmingham and Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney in attendance, lived up to its billing from the start as Jack Marriott put Wrexham ahead within three minutes.

Despite the high-profile summer signing, Stansfield showed no signs of pressure as he netted twice, complementing his goals with a tireless performance, before Tomoki Iwata’s spectacular effort wrapped up the win for City.

The game wasn’t without its drama, as a clash between Paul Mullin and Alex Cochrane sparked a melee and Krystian Bielik saw red late on. However, the result meant Birmingham drew level with Wrexham at the top of the league.

Davies lauded Stansfield, saying: “From Jay’s point of view, he scored a real striker’s finish on the first one, instinctive rebound and then the second goal you have to give credit to Cochrane but not an easy chance on that angle.

“It wasn’t just his goals, the pressing and work-rate, the intensity of the runs, the movement, there’s so much more to it than that, not just the goals but what he contributes to the team.

“I’ve said a few times that by making sure performances are there and playing well, we will get the outcome.”

Davies said: “The performance was excellent, it’s the best we’ve played for a largest period in a game this season.”

The match drew attention due to the presence of former England stars David Beckham and Gary Neville, who joined Brady, the chairman of a new advisory board at Birmingham, at St Andrew’s.

However, Davies insisted that his team remained focused on the game, saying: “We weren’t paying attention to that sort of stuff.”

He added: “It’s something I did address with the players that this is going on but that’s not our domain, ours is the pitch, what we do and the performance, external stuff is irrelevant to us.”

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson reflected on the defeat, saying: “It’s a good learning curve, we’ve hardly conceded a goal this season and haven’t been behind in a game.”

He continued: “At the start of the season if you said you’re going to be top of the league and after the first three away games you’re going to only lose once, we’d have all taken that.

“Five games unbeaten, during the season you will lose games of football, that’s inevitable we’ll take the lessons into the next few games.

“We’re top of the league and have 40 games to go but any defeat is tough to take.”
