West Ham are set to win the race for Kalvin Phillips in a loan switch next week to deal Newcastle a big blow.

West Ham are set to win the race for Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips, dealing a big blow to Newcastle, it has been reported.

Phillips is ready to leave Manchester City to boost his chances with England in Euro 2024. David Moyes, West Ham’s boss, is offering Phillips more playtime than Newcastle and has agreed to match his £130,000-a-week salary from City.

The deal is initially a loan until the end of the season but could be reviewed in the summer. This is a setback for Newcastle who have shown interest in Phillips.

Juventus and Crystal Palace also showed interest in Phillips, but it looks like West Ham will secure his signature. West Ham’s Said Benrahma might be leaving the club this month as French clubs show interest.

The Hammers, who will be playing against Sheffield United on Sunday, will be without Lucas Paqueta and Michail Antonio for a while. David Moyes’ team also missed Edson Alvarez, the Mexico midfielder, in their recent FA Cup loss to Bristol City due to a calf issue.

England manager Gareth Southgate is likely to be pleased with the news of Phillips’ potential move, having kept him in the squad despite his limited game time. Last year, Southgate confessed: “We’d like him to be in a better rhythm.”
