McTominay claims Spurs sold for £11 million was undervalued.
Mousa Dembele has become one of the most popular footballers in Premier League history since leaving Tottenham.
Dembele didn’t necessarily get the credit he deserved when he was playing, but since leaving Spurs, he’s taken on this near-mythical status.
The Belgian is regularly discussed as one of the best midfielders of the modern era, and now, speaking to Goal, Scott McTominay has named him as the most underrated player in recent memory.
Indeed, McTominay was asked to name the best footballer in a number of different categories, and when he was asked who the most underrated player he could think of, he said Dembele.
Dembele so underrated
McTominay spoke about the midfielder Tottenham sold for £11m.
“Goalscorer?” McTominay was asked.
“Harry Kane,’ McTominay said
“Underrated?” McTominay was then asked.
“Mousa Dembele,” McTominay replired
“Speed?” McTominay next had to answer.
“Mbappe,” McTominay stated.
Highly rated
Once upon a time, we would’ve agreed that Dembele was the most underrated player in the Premier League, but now, the script has flipped on that front.
Indeed, Dembele is now spoken about so much by his peers that, dare we say it, he’s almost become overrated.
We love the Belgian as much as the next person, but his abilities are being somewhat overstated here.
Dembele was a fantastic player for Tottenham, but during his time at Spurs he was never one of the key players in the same way Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen, Toby Alderweireld or Jan Vertonghen were.
Dembele was a player who knitted everything together nicely, and perhaps the most press resistant player we’ve seen in the league, but he wasn’t the difference-maker that some make him out to be.
Dembele is a fantastic player, but the discussion around him as of late means that he can’t really be considered underrated anymore.
