Tottenham decides whether to move Kalvin Phillips.
Tottenham have been linked with a January loan move for Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips, and football.london understands a decision has been made on a potential deal for the England international
Tottenham have been linked with a January move to sign Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips. The England international look set to leave the club just 18 months after arriving for an initial fee of around £42million.
However, with a number of injury issues and strong competition for places in Pep Guardiola’s midfield, the 28-year-old has only made 16 Premier League appearances since arriving at the Etihad Stadium.
Phillips is reportedly keen on a move away from City to help secure a place in England’s Euro 2024 squad, with the likes of Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice nailing down roles in Gareth Southgate’s team over the last two years. A number of clubs have been linked with a move for the midfielder, including the likes of Juventus and Newcastle.
However, while Spurs have also been mentioned as potential candidates to sign Phillips, football.london understands that the club are not looking to make a move for the England international at this time. The club are already well-stocked in this area of the pitch, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Rodrigo Bentancur, Oliver Skipp, Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma all able to fulfil the role in Ange Postecoglou’s side.
While Spurs have been short in this area at times, the return of Bentancur from a serious injury and the availability of Sarr and Bissouma following the Africa Cup of Nations means that any deal for Phillips makes little sense. Spurs will will continue to explore opportunities for young stars on the rise, with potential loan-back deals, as they did with players such as Udogie and Sarr.
Spurs have already invested heavily in transfers this season, adding Timo Werner and Radu Dragusin in January following the summer arrivals of Brennan Johnson, James Maddison, Micky van de Ven, Guglielmo Vicario, Alejo Veliz and Manor Solomon, as well as making loan moves permanent for Pedro Porro and Dejan Kulusevski.
