Newcastle fell to their sixth defeat in their last seven games in the Premier League and can see their European dream slipping away with every poor result.

Speaking on The Two Robbies Podcast, Mustoe was adamant that Newcastle will not be looking to sack Howe any time soon with everyone at the club still all pulling in the same direction.

Mustoe says Newcastle players still love Howe

Howe may be struggling to keep his players fit or to gain a crucial three points in a big like against City on Saturday, but he has certainly not lost the trust of his players who are all still running themselves into the ground for him.

Despite the form, there is still a real sense of togetherness in St James’ park, although social media may have you thinking otherwise, it’s what happens in that stadium that really matters.

With the support of the team, the fans and the board there’s absolutely no reason why Howe can’t turn this run of form around, it’s when he loses the dressing room that the pressure is really on.

Obviously Newcastle would like to return to winning ways, but they also know that last season, while it wasn’t fluke, it was an overachievement and something that nobody expected, so they shouldn’t be expected to repeat it either.

On the podcast, Mustoe said: “Not for me and I don’t think for the club. I’ve said before I miss the real Newcastle United and I think we saw that for periods in the game with some of the intensity, the finishing, St James’ Park.

“It felt good again. I think we’re a long way for him to be under pressure and looking over his shoulder.

“I think the players still love him, the ownership and the board still love him and I think the fans appreciated what he’s done.”

Howe needs to have a very positive February

January isn’t a write-off so to speak, but there was very little expectation for Newcastle to beat Liverpool, Man City and Aston Villa, so Howe won’t be judged on those results alone.
