leicester city winger offers a sincere pledge in response to Coventry City’s red card

Leicester City winger Abdul Fatawu has promised to learn from his red card against Coventry and give even more to gain promotion at the end of the season.

The 19-year-old has been a key player since his arrival on loan from Sporting in the summer. His non-selection for Ghana for the Africa Cup of Nations was seen as a boost, but depending on whether City appeal against the red card decision, he now faces three games on the sidelines.

Fatawu was shown a straight red card by referee Darren England two minutes into added time in the first half after a late challenge. The decision came just three minutes after Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall had put City 1-0 up from the penalty spot.

After going a man down, City restricted Coventry to few clear-cut chances in the second half, but three late goals saw them fall to a 3-1 defeat, ending a run of 11 games without loss.

Late on Saturday night, Fatawu took to social media to respond to his red card and send a message to both his team-mates and fans.

“It was so disappointing for me to be the cause of our defeats,” he wrote on Instagram. “I will learn from my mistakes and I will thank my team mates for the effort they gave out, and thanks to the fans for the lovely support.

“Only God knows how desperate I was to win this game and only God knows the best. As I am a learner I will learn from my mistake and get better. This will even make me stronger to fight for the shirt and give more to the team to achieve the goal we all want to archive. GOD IS IN CONTROL.”

The post prompted a response from Ricardo Pereira, who wore the captain’s armband at the CBS Arena, the full-back turned midfielder writing: “That’s it bro, learn from it to be better.”

Hamza Choudhury and Marc Albrighton both responded with heart emojis while Mads Hermansen commented with praising hands emojis.

Ricardo himself took to Instagram to respond to the defeat, saying: “We left the field the same way we entered. Together. Thank you to all 4,500 fans.”

Should City not appeal against the decision then Fatawu will miss City’s next outing, against second-placed Ipswich at the King Power Stadium. The Tractor Boys’ win over Sunderland on Saturday saw them close the gap on the Foxes at the top to seven points.

The match will also see Enzo Maresca watch from the stands. His complaints over a lack of second yellow card for Kasey Palmer saw him shown his third yellow of the season, meaning he has to serve a touchline ban.
