Anthony Gordon sends message to Newcastle fans
Anthony Gordon has sent a message to Newcastle United fans after their last-minute defeat to Manchester City on Saturday.
Gordon has been playing at an unbelievably high level for Newcastle this season, but his efforts alone have just not been enough to get the team over the line in many games.
After scoring a brilliant individual goal against City yesterday, the winger took to Instagram to admit how ‘frustrating’ it was to lose the game but promise that they will be ‘back better’ after the break.
Gordon is a big game player for Newcastle
Gordon has made huge improvements this season compared to the level he was showing when he first signed from Everton in January 2023 and was often exhausted by the 60th minute.
Now, not only has he massively improved his game in the final third with 14 goals and assists in 20 Premier League games, the 22-year-old is also doing it when the team needs him most.
So far this season, Gordon has already scored against Arsenal, Man City, Man United, grabbed a goal and assist against both Liverpool and Chelsea as well as assisting against Aston Villa.
The £45m signing has become the definition of a big game player for Newcastle even if the results haven’t gone the way that he and the supporters would have hoped, especially yesterday.
On Instagram after the game, Gordon said: “A lot of character shown from the team today to fight the way we did. Frustrating though to end the game like that. Time for some much needed rest & then we’ll be back battling.”
Gordon is knocking on Southgate’s door
It would be incredibly harsh to leave Gordon out of the England squad for this summer’s Euro 2024 tournament especially after seeing what he can do in big games.
You’d struggle to pick many players who have been performing at a higher level in the Premier League than Gordon this season, let alone ones who would be ahead of him in the Three Lions squad.
It would be an absolutely baffling decision to see Marcus Rashford included once again after such a disappointing campaign, but time and time again we’ve seen Southgate opt for the more experienced heads.
For Newcastle fans, it’s probably best that Gordon gets a long rest having competed in Under-21s Euros last summer and playing the majority of games this year in an intense season, but on a personal level it would be an incredible achievement for the young man.
