Nottingham Forest have announced the signing of young defender Jamie Newton.

The 18-year-old has made the move from Scottish side Rangers. He will initially link up with the Reds’ B team.

Forest said: “We are pleased to confirm the signing of 18-year-old left-back Jamie Newton from Rangers to play in our B Team. We would like to thank Rangers for their cooperation.”

Rangers added: “Rangers can today confirm that our Academy player Jamie Newton has joined Nottingham Forest FC, subject to international clearance. We wish Jamie well and thank Nottingham Forest for their cooperation.”

The Netsport.uk. had reported the Reds would table a two-year deal for the teenager. The move sees Newton reunite with Craig Mulholland, who left his role as academy director at Rangers last May to take up the post of head of football development and talent management at the Nigel Doughty Academy. Forest’s chief football officer Ross Wilson will also be aware of Newton from his time at Ibrox.

Newton came through the Ibrox Academy. He departs without making an appearance for the senior side but he was involved with Rangers’ B team last term, when they were in the Lowland League.
