Everton fan ridiculed live on talkSPORT for ‘bizarre’ rant as Newcastle United dragged into debate

Andy Goldstein laughed off suggestions from a talkSPORT caller that Everton are being punished by the Premier League as they are considered a threat to the established elite.

The caller, named only as Dave, stated there was an ulterior motive against the Toffees in wake of Thursday’s (4 January) 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace in which Dominic Calvert-Lewin was harshly sent off.

In a six-minute conversation, the Everton fan added that Premier League chiefs felt threatened by the club rivalling the division’s top-six teams.

However, Goldstein replied [5 January, 04:32pm]: “What are you talking about? What about Newcastle United?

“I get your gripe, but there isn’t an agenda to get Everton relegated.

“I’ve heard all your reasons, and it is bizarre, but give me an explanation as to why they don’t want Everton in the league?”

Goldstein added: “You’re coming across so bitter, honestly. You cannot think the Premier League have an ulterior motive because they fear Everton will challenge the top six?”

Easy to dismiss

The point the caller was making is that Everton have so often been wronged this season, from the Calvert-Lewin red card that should never have been to the record points deduction.

It is easy to dismiss all this from the outside looking in, but the evidence for it is certainly starting to stack up.

That said, the point about the Premier League possibly feeling threatened about the Toffees challenging the top-six elite is a little wide of the mark.

Unfortunately, we have been more accustomed to relegation scraps in recent years than looking up at the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal.

Newcastle seem to be going about their business, although this caller’s point will certainly have more validation if the Premier League go after the Magpies at any point.

There may be further punishment to come for Everton, too, as the club’s latest accounts are now being checked over. For the sake of the sanity of supporters, let’s hope those come back with no issues.

In other Everton news, an agent has confirmed talks have been held with the Toffees over the signing of a South American talent.
