Brennan Johnson’s potential at Tottenham Spurs
Brennan Johnson’s time wearing a Tottenham shirt has been extremely limited.
The player, who arrived from Nottingham Forrest at the close of the summer transfer season, played his first minutes in Sheffield’s 2-1 triumph as a substitute. The next game, a 2-2 tie with Arsenal, saw him make his debut start; however, he exited the field early due to an injury that kept him out of the next two games.
At last, he returned to action in the 81st minute against Fulham and again in the 64th against Palace, where he provided an assist on a pivotal goal.
The next game, against Chelsea, he was substituted off in the 34th minute after Ange was forced to make some difficult decisions due to Cristian Romero’s early red card. Despite Tottenham’s 2-1 loss, Johnson managed to score in the third minute after finally getting a good opportunity against Wolves.
The Welshman has scored a goal and provided an assist in 217 minutes of play, or little more than two complete games. Despite an uncomfortable first few months of playing time and an injury, he has performed well thus far, raising the issue of how important he could be for Spurs in the future.
“Brennan hasn’t exactly had a flawless run… He’s had a very turbulent start to his career with us, but I believe that the more opportunities we give him, the more goals and goal threat he possesses. However, you could see at the end of the Wolves game that he sort of ran out of legs due to the fact that he hasn’t played much football since the beginning of the season.
The consensus at the moment seems to be that he has yet to fulfill his potential in North London, largely due to his fluctuations in fitness. With Richarlison sidelined to injury for what could be a few months, however, he’ll likely be getting tremendous game time.
Tottenham face tough opponents in the coming weeks with Aston Villa at home and City away for the next two fixtures. Johnson will surely be given the chance to get his stamina back up over the international break ahead of the matches, and he’ll be a crucial point of attack with James Maddison set to be out until the new year as well.
