Luis enrique disappointment speech to Newscastle for their 4-1 defeat last night
Newcastle United defeated PSG at St. James’ Park in a convincing victory as they made their home Champions League debut.
How have last night’s result left Group F?
A famous win at home and AC Milan’s failure to beat Dortmund in Germany mean that after the first two Champions League matchdays of the season, Newcastle are sitting pretty at the top of Group F…
Group F
- Newcastle – PTS: 4, GD: 3
- PSG – PTS: 3, GD: -1
- AC Milan – PTS: 2, GD: 0
- Dortmund – PTS: 1, GD: -2 “When you make mistakes, you pay for them,” said Luis Enrique. It was a night to forget for PSG manager Luis Enrique and his disappointment shone through in his post-match interview with TNT Sports:
💬 “It was a difficult night. I don’t think we deserved that kind of result but they were so effective in the last part of the pitch, and we made some mistakes. At this level it’s always difficult to accept that and, when you make mistakes you pay for them.”
A night to live long in the memory
The memories of what went on tonight at St James’ Park will be etched in the minds of Newcastle fans for years to come. So what of the immediate reaction from supporters? Well how about these two little peaches from our discussion tab (make sure you check it out for yourself):
- Joshua C: “That was incredible, can’t describe the excitement watching. Lascelles was a rock; deserves so many plaudits after sitting on the sidelines for so long. Longstaff is the heart of this team. Him and Burn scoring is the stuff dreams are made of. What a magical night.”
- Chris D: “What a match. The team were electric. Top of the group now and long may that continue!”
Joshua has also suggested Sean Longstaff gets an England call-up. The next England squad for October’s games is announced tomorrow at 2pm. Gareth Southgate, it’s over to you…
For someone who had not experienced management in Europe before this season, victories like tonight’s must mean so much more to Howe. He spoke to TNT Sports:
💬 “(It was) an amazing evening for us. There were so many stories to talk about within the game itself but, first and foremost, I’m just delighted for everyone connected with the club. And the supporters, what they gave us tonight was incredible.”
On the performance itself:
💬 “We had to defend really well, we did. Collectively, our spirit and our energy was excellent and we created the positive things we had in the first half from really aggressive pressing. In the second half, we had to dig deep and try and get over the line.”
It was electric, said Burn.
Dan Burn’s powerful first-half header — given after a long VAR delay — was Newcastle’s second goal and put the hosts in such a commanding position. He told TNT Sports:
💬 “It hasn’t really sunk in, I’m a bit speechless. We said we wanted to entertain the crowd, I know that away (to AC Milan) our performance got a bit of a battering but I knew when we got a team at home with the crowd behind us… It was electric.”
On his goal he added:
💬 “(It was) amazing. When the offside flag went up, I was gutted. As soon as it got hung (up towards the back post), I thought ‘I’m going for it’.”
