By defeating Preston North End, Leicester City made it nine victories in ten Championship games and reclaimed first place in the table. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall scored twice in the victory.

Ipswich’s victory over Hull on Tuesday knocked them down to second, but they overcame third-placed Preston’s fight with goals from Dewsbury-Hall on either side of Kelechi Iheanacho’s side-foot attempt from six yards.

After Ali McCann slid in to stop a Wilfred Ndidi pass across the box but misdirected it into the path of the midfielder, the game was finally broken when the latter tapped past Freddie Woodman with his left foot.

After Woodman stopped Iheanacho’s opening shot, Dewsbury-Hall sealed just the second home victory in the previous 13 league encounters between the two teams.

Foxes boss Enzo Maresca gave Conor Coady his league debut in place of the suspended Jannik Vestergaard, but the England defender had a comfortable introduction as Preston were content to soak up pressure and try to hit the home side on the break.

Stephy Mavididi fed a superb ball through to Dewsbury-Hall in the box, but he was foiled by a superb block from Liam Lindsay and that was as close as Leicester came before the break, despite enjoying 75% of the possession.

Ndidi headed over the angle early in the second half before Dewsbury-Hall curled a 25-yarder just the wrong side of the post from Ricardo Pereira’s pass.

Preston went close when Duane Holmes fired in a 25-yard shot that Mads Hermansen pushed past the post, but that was their only effort on target.

After Dewsbury-Hall had scored the game’s first goal, he and Ndidi worked together to set up Iheanacho, who had been brought on to replace Jamie Vardy, for an easy finish from six yards.

After losing 4-0 to West Bromwich Albion at home on Saturday, it left Preston facing a second straight defeat. Any chances of a comeback were dashed when Dewsbury-Hall skillfully completed another excellent Leicester move.

With a home match against Stoke City on Saturday, they will have two more points than Ipswich.
