Newcastle United are on the verge of agreeing on a new contract with star midfielder Bruno Guimaraes after a few months of impasse.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle United and Bruno Guimaraes are close to agreeing on a new deal to sort out his future at the club. Talks have occurred between the two parties for many months, with the 25-year-old star always intending to remain at St James Park.

If one player epitomises this Newcastle United project, it must be Bruno Guimaraes. To the surprise of many, the Magpies beat the competition and signed the Brazilian midfielder from Lyon, paying a hefty sum in return in January 2022.

Arsenal were one of the clubs keeping a close eye, and since he’s come to Newcastle United, the likes of Real Madrid had eyes for the Brazilian at some stage. His impact at the club has been propelling them to a top-four finish in his first full season.

Guimaraes remains one of Eddie Howe’s most important personnel in this squad, as the manager has designed their plan around the Brazilian. Since joining the Magpies, the 25-year-old star has made 61 appearances in all competitions, scoring ten goals and further assisting six.

Those numbers are staggering for a defensive midfielder, who the club see as their future. Talks over a new contract began a few months ago, and Guimaraes had publicly expressed his desire to prolong his stay here.

Barcelona were also interested at some stage, while Guimaraes himself confirmed Real Madrid’s interest. However, he has also spoken previously about his desire to become a legend at Newcastle United, and his keenness to stay put has made it easier for the club to negotiate a new deal with ease.

As per Fabrizio Romano, Guimaraes is close to agreeing on a new deal with Newcastle United. The Italian journalist insists there have been ‘secret talks’ over the last ten days, and everyone can expect a positive outcome.

He also suggested it’s a matter of ironing out the final details, and then Guimaraes will pen the new deal. The 25-year-old star’s current contract expires in 2026, which may have made it difficult for interested clubs to approach.

For Newcastle fans, the new contract will boost their mood as they consider Guimaraes a fan-favourite within St James Park. Having signed Sandro Tonali amid solid competition from rivals, the Magpies will hope the pair, alongside Joelinton, will pave the way for a solid midfield foundation for years to come and take the club to new heights domestically and in Europe.
