Howe Speech After Saturday’s Game At The Etithad Stadium
Liverpool will take on Newcastle United next weekend in the Premier League
Newcastle United could be without Joelinton for Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Liverpool at St James’ Park.
The Brazilian, who has experienced a drastic change of fortunes at Newcastle since being moved from the final third to central midfield, was forced off after 57 minutes of the Magpies’ 1-0 defeat by Manchester City on Saturday evening.
Joelinton only missed six Premier League games for Eddie Howe’s side last term, three of which were due to yellow card suspensions, and would be a major loss for the Toon Army should he be set for a spell on the sidelines.
It remains to be seen whether or not the 27-year-old will have recovered in time for this weekend’s clash with Liverpool, though Howe did not give much encouragement of this being the case when speaking after Saturday’s game at the Etihad Stadium. He said: “I know what you know, he didn’t move well when he came off the pitch. Fingers crossed he’s okay.”
Liverpool’s home shirt for the 2023/2024 campaign pays homage to Bill Shankly and the legendary Reds manager’s final season in charge at Anfield. The Nike shirt features a bright red design with a bold white contrast on the colour and cuffs.
Should Joelinton be declared unavailable for Sunday’s showdown, a chance could be forthcoming for Elliot Anderson. The 20-year-old enjoyed a hugely successful loan spell at Bristol Rovers in 2022/23 after helping Joey Barton’s side earn automatic promotion from League Two and has since been trusted to earn substitute appearances in both of Newcastle’s opening two top-flight games this campaign.
Newcastle are also set to be without Joe Willock in this position, who Howe predicted would miss “the first group of games before the first international break” earlier this month. Liverpool, meanwhile, are facing midfield problems of their own after Alexis Mac Allister’s red card during the 3-1 win over Bournemouth. The Argentina international is facing a three-match ban at present, though the Reds could decide to appeal his suspension.
