Bruno Fernandes thinks Manchester United were wasteful in front of goal in the 2-0 defeat against Tottenham on Saturday evening and he admitted he should have scored his free header in the first half of the contest.

Erik ten Hag named an unchanged team for the game and it was an opportunity for those players to kick on after an underwhelming display in the win against Wolves and there were chances for both sides in the first half.

United were denied a clear penalty when Alejandro Garnacho’s effort in the 27th minute struck Cristian Romero’s extended arm, but Spurs also came close to taking the lead when striking the woodwork twice before the interval.

The game was somehow goalless at half-time and it was Tottenham who broke the deadlock shortly after play resumed. Pape Sarr found the back of the net after a deflected cross and the advantage was extended in the 82nd minute.

Ben Davies’ effort trickled into the goal and goalkeeper Andre Onana, who emerged with credit, looked visibly angry.

Fernandes spoke to MUTV after the game and he rued wasting his own big chance, which was the team’s best of the game.

“We didn’t take our chances,” he said. “We had many chances to score a goal and I had a big one that I had to score. I have to find a way to score that header, we didn’t [score] and after we concede a goal early in the second half, the game was difficult.

“We hit the post, we had more chances on the counter that we could have done better in the last moment with, but today, differently than against Wolves, we played much more football, we created more chances but we weren’t ruthless enough.

“We didn’t score goals and get any points. I looked too much at the goalkeeper instead of focusing on the ball and the movement I did was too quick, so I didn’t get the ball the way I should have.

“Either way, I have to get that header on the target.”
