Arsenal agree £10m deal with Nottingham Forest for Matt Turner as David Raya move edges closer

The Gunners have agreed a fee to sell their USMNT goalkeeper as they look to bring in Brentford’s David Raya as a replacement

Arsenal have agreed a fee of up to £10million with Nottingham Forest for Matt Turner.

The deal is thought to be an initial £7million, with a further £3million in potential add ons. The American is now set to travel to Nottingham in order to complete the move

Turner was signed from New England Revolution last summer for around £5million and made seven appearances in his debut campaign, keeping five clean sheets. Despite failing to displace Aaron Ramsdale as Arsenal number one though, the American won plenty of admirers for his shot-stopping ability and his work on the international stage.

Turner’s exit is set to pave the way for Arsenal to bring in David Raya from Brentford. The Gunners are in ongoing talks for the Spanish stopper. Brentford are understood to value Raya at around £40million, but there is confidence that a compromise can be reached for the 27-year-old who has just 12 months remaining on his contract. Bayern Munich have also shown an interest this summer, but Raya is keen on a move to the Emirates.

Arsenal have admired Raya – who worked with goalkeeping coach Inaki Cana at Brentford – for a long time, and tried to sign him before bringing in Aaron Ramsdale in 2021. The Spaniard is now expected to come in and compete for the number one spot with Aaron Ramsdale

“The competition always exists whoever it is,” Mikel Arteta said in relation to questions over what this means for Ramsdale’s position in the starting XI. “That’s how it has to feel like. It has to feel like this and if it doesn’t feel like this we’re not gonna get the best out of each player. So we’d better feel like this and make sure we all feel like this. Me first.”
