Wycombe win shows Chris Davies’ Birmingham City are racing in one direction
Birmingham City have one foot in the Championship after handling title rivals Wycombe Wanderers to pull 12 points clear in the League One title race.
Taylor Gardner-Hickman’s first half goal sealed a 1-0 win for Blues over their nearest challengers and extended their unbeaten run to 18 matches.
In addition to their handsome lead at the summit, Chris Davies’ side also have a game-in-hand on the teams below them in the League One table
It would take quite the fall from here – and quite the run of form from their rivals – to take the League One title out of Blues’ hands. The EFL could probably be forgiven for getting a headstart and engraving Blues’ name on the trophy.
Now that Blues have 76 points from 32 matches, they are only five wins away from the magic 90 – a total which almost always sees teams promoted from League One.
Blues will have their sights set much higher than that though. Blues’ win over Wycombe means they are now tracking for 109 points over this 46-game season – a total that would see them eclipse not only the League One points record, but the EFL one too.
Arguably the most impressive thing about Blues’ season is their record against the teams around them. Wycombe completed Blues’ 10 matches against the other members of the top-six at the start of play on Saturday.
Blues have taken 26 points from a possible 30 against those sides and haven’t lost once. They have dominated this league and are headed in only one direction: the Championship.
