Rafael Nadal’s uncle Toni sounds off on ‘nonsense’ Jannik Sinner doping ban

Toni Nadal has come to Jannik Sinner’s defense as Rafael Nadal’s uncle pretty much thinks that it is nonsense to ban the Italian if no one is denying that he didn’t knowingly or intentionally take a banned substance. 

Earlier this month, a WADA spokesperson explained that the anti-doping agency wasn’t questioning the 23-year-old’s integrity or his explanation that the physio was to blame for an Inadvertent contamination.

However, their belief is that every athlete is also responsible for potential mistakes of their team and therefore the three-time Grand Slam champion deserved to get at least a short ban. 

A couple of days later, the news came out that Sinner and the WADA reached a settlement on a three-month doping ban – which automatically meant that their CAS hearing was canceled. 

In their statement, the WADA confirmed that they fully believed that the reigning Australian Open champion didn’t knowingly or intentionally take a prohibited substance. 

And reflecting on it, Uncle Toni has a hard time understanding why should the world No. 1 serve suspension if both the ITIA and WADA accepted that he didn’t mean to cheat. 

Toni Nadal: You can’t treat a person like that for a mistake that happened by chance

“I’ve already said it many times and explained it, I’m against the sanction,” Uncle Toni told Marca.

“I know Sinner personally and he had no intention of committing a crime and you can’t treat a person like that for a mistake that happened by chance. 

“It can’t be that you have that desire to supervise and sanction. You have to sanction someone who intentionally does things wrong and is looking for their own benefit. 

“And I know that’s not the case with Sinner. I know that he didn’t benefit from what they found. So why do you want to sanction him? 

“It’s true that they say that others who aren’t No. 1 were sanctioned because they did wrong before.
