Leicester City will need to improve their squad if they are to avoid being relegated in 2024/25.

Ruud van Nistelrooy has been brought to the King Power Stadium to try and save the club from a swift return to the Championship.

The former Manchester United man got his stint in the Midlands off to a great start, with Leicester City beating West Ham United 3-1 in his first game in charge.

However, the Foxes cannot afford to get carried away. The Hammers have been poor themselves this season and the battle to avoid relegation remains tight.

Position Team Played Won Drawn Lost For Against Diff Points

14 West Ham 14 4 3 7 18 27 -9 15
15 Everton 14 3 5 6 14 21 -7 14
16 Leicester 14 3 4 7 19 28 -9 13
17 Crystal Palace 14 2 6 6 12 18 -6 12
18 Ipswich 14 1 6 7 13 25 -12 9
19 Wolves 14 2 3 9 22 36 -14 9

In turn, January additions should be made but a recent update on Leicester’s financial situation suggests new signings will be few and far between.

As a result, we have now picked out three free agents Van Nistelrooy can target in order to improve his team while not breaking the bank.

Three free agents Leicester City can now sign under Ruud van Nistelrooy

Brandon Williams

If there is one area that really needs addressing at the King Power this winter it is full-back.

Leicester fans are growing tired of James Justin, who has underperformed on so many occasions in 2024/25 so far.

To make matters worse, Ricardo Pereira is out injured for four months, leaving Ruud with very limited options at full-back.

However, Brandon Williams remains a free agent after being released by Manchester United over the summer.

The 24-year-old has previous top-flight experience, making 47 appearances, and his versatility means he can provide cover on both sides of a back four.

Ryan Kent

Another position that needs strengthening in the January transfer window is the left wing.

Abdul Fatawu is out for the rest of the season, leaving Leicester very short of quality wide options.

Ryan Kent is now available on a free transfer, though, after being released by Fenerbahce in October.

The former Liverpool academy prospect previously had huge success with Rangers, scoring 33 and assisting 56 while also playing plenty of European football.

Kent is a natural left-winger but could provide cover all across the front line if needed.

Daniel Amartey

Leicester fans will already be very familiar with Daniel Amartey, who spent seven years at the club between 2016 and 2023.

He then joined Besiktas on a free transfer in July 2023 before being released by the Turkish side earlier this year.

Amartey played over 120 games for Leicester and was part of their title-winning team.

Granted, he never set the world alight in the Midlands but with Wout Faes so poor this season and the Foxes leaking goals, Van Nistelrooy will need all the help he can get shoring up the club’s backline.

Sunday presents a difficult test against a high-flying Brighton side who have impressed under the youngest manager in the league, Fabian Hurzeler.

Should results go their way, the Foxes could go as many as seven points clear of the bottom three with a win at the King Power Stadium.

Van Nistelrooy will want his best squad available ready for a tough encounter so, with that, here is all of the latest team news from Leicester City.

Facundo Buonanotte – out

Facundo Buonanotte will be unavailable for this weekend’s game due to being on loan from Brighton.

Buonanotte has been one of Leicester’s star players this season and will be a huge loss for Van Nistelrooy given his impact this season.
