What Mike Tyson said about Wolves in 2013, as he loses Netflix bout with Jake Paul – he was so wrong
Some fans will have seen a picture of Mike Tyson in a Wolves shirt doing the rounds on social media, amid the legend’s defeat to Jake Paul.
Tyson took on the YouTuber in his first fight for 19 years – and many have criticised the event for failing to live up to expectations.
Paul won via unanimous decision after the eight-round contest, which took place at the AT&T Stadium in Texas.
The fight, which was streamed on Netflix, was scored 80-72, 79-73 and 79-73 in favor of Paul.
Tyson, 58, was lively at first but quickly tired and many felt Paul could have knocked him out, but chose not to out of respect. Paul even bowed to Tyson in the final seconds of the fight, and admitted afterwards that he ‘didn’t want to hurt someone that didn’t need to be hurt (via NBC News).
Interestingly, one photo of Tyson sporting a Wolves shirt started doing the rounds on social media, and he has actually spoke about the club before.
‘Fan’ Mike Tyson once backed Wolves to survive relegation
Back in February 2013, Wolves were fighting for survival in the Championship.
At the time, Dean Saunders had likened the club’s downfall to Tyson’s in boxing. He said (via E&S): “Mike Tyson was unbeatable at one stage, but three years later everyone was beating him. If you’re not the same animal that’s had the success, you’ve got to get back to doing what you’re good at. Are we playing with the same desire and enthusiasm or do we still want to win as much as we did?
“Some players got promoted from this league previously but that’s gone.
Tyson was shown Saunders’ comments by his Birmingham-based former sparring partner ‘Big’ Joe Egan.
“He’s right. I went from the best in the world to a very bad place. I don’t know that much about football but it sounds like Wolverhampton have a manager who can turn the team around. Joe is going to let me know how they get on.
“When I’m over in England I would like to see them in action.”
Egan stated at the time that Tyson actually had an affiliation with Wolves and Wolverhampton, having done his ‘Come back to the fans’ tour at the city’s Civic Hall in November 2009.
Egan said Tyson had taken a liking to the hospitality of the place and the people, and that he had ‘taken an interest’ in the club from that point.
How did Wolves get on after Mike Tyson comments?
Saunders was appointed Wolves manager in January 2013, succeeding Stale Solbakken on a one-year rolling contract.
Wolves did not get a win under Saunders until his 10th game in charge, which was a 2-0 away victory against Millwall.
After Dave Edwards gave Wolves the lead with a volley, Sylvain Ebanks-Blake then scored a terrific overhead kick to make sure of the points.
Tyson’s prediction that Wolves appeared to have a manager who could turn things around could not have been more wrong, with Wolves going on to suffer relegation to League One under Saunders at the end of the season.
A final-day defeat to Brighton confirmed Wolves’ fate, and Saunders’ contract was terminated three days after the club’s relegation.
