Finally The Hidden Transfer “Boost” Of Gary O’Neil Revealed! It Is An Added Advantage…
Wolves handed unlikely transfer boost as forgotten star receives first national call-up
Wolves have loaned out eight players for the 2024/25 campaign and one star could now hand Gary O’Neil an unlikely transfer boost.
Gary O’Neil made several bold calls in the summer, loaning out many of his fringe stars to gain more experience.
There have been a few success stories from the talent that were sent away from Molineux temporarily, and one of those is left-back Hugo Bueno.
Bueno is flourishing for Champions League side Feyenoord and Wolves fans are excited about him returning at the end of the season.
The Spaniard isn’t the only player catching the eye on loan, with one star now receiving his first international call-up.
Robert Martinez hands Fabio Silva first Portugal call-up
Wolves loaned out striker Fabio Silva to La Liga side Las Palmas in August as O’Neil didn’t see him having a future in Wolverhampton.
The 22-year-old has been a disappointment since arriving for £35 million from Porto in 2020, scoring just five goals in 72 appearances.
Now, the centre-forward is plotting his redemption in Spain with three goals in nine appearances for Las Palmas, resulting in talks of a Portugal call-up for Silva.
Those talks have now come to life after his country confirmed their place in the Nations League quarter-finals with a 5-1 win over Poland on Friday night.
With nothing riding on their final game against Croatia on Monday, Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, Pedro Neto and Bernardo Silva will return to their clubs while Geovany Quenda and Silva have received the call, as confirmed by Fabrizio Romano.
It’s a proud moment for the Wolves striker, who has gone from struggling for confidence in Wolverhampton to flourishing in Spain and is now in line to make his debut for Portugal.
The fee Wolves could receive for Fabio Silva
Despite impressing out on loan so far and receiving an international call-up, Wolves are planning on selling Silva in the summer.
That is an unsurprising stance from the club given how he’s struggled to adapt to England’s top flight, though his recent form will please O’Neil.
It’s unlikely that Wolves will ever recoup what they paid for the Portuguese striker but a strong rest of the season and further recognition on the international stage could see his value skyrocket.
There will be pressure to receive the right offer for Silva in 2025 as his contract expires a year later, and they won’t want to run the risk of him leaving for nothing.
Compared to how low his stock was in the summer, perhaps Wolves will be able to hold out for at least £15 million or £20 million if they’re lucky.
It isn’t close to the £35 million they paid however, it is at least some consolation.
