Jamie Vardy hits milestone with Leicester City striker on course to defy infamous comment

Steve Cooper has tasked his Leicester City team with creating more chances for Jamie Vardy with the talisman taking just eight games to match his goals tally from his last Premier League season.

Vardy slammed in his third of the campaign at Southampton, converting a penalty after Ryan Fraser’s shirt pull stopped him scoring a tap-in. Added to his goals against Tottenham and Crystal Palace, Vardy is up to three for the season, the same number he managed in 37 outings when City were relegated two years ago.

The number nine is proving that season was a blip rather than a sign of significant decline in his ability. Cooper certainly believes City have the man to get on the scoresheet regularly, with the job now to fashion more opportunities for him.

Despite City being one of just two sides to have scored in every game this term, along with Manchester City, they’ve actually had the fewest shots in the division. Vardy’s been clinical at the top end, scoring his three goals from just nine efforts.

“If I could bottle what he’s got, I’d be extremely rich, I promise you,” Cooper said of his captain. “We’re really enjoying working with him, working together with his programme and respecting where he’s at. He just seems really hungry.

“He’s got three goals and it’s a decent return. But we haven’t created enough chances in games. I want us to be more attacking, more creative, more of a team with good end product. We will get there but we’re building towards that because we’re getting back into the league.

“But we’ve still got the guy who can score the goals. I can’t speak highly enough of him. And it’s just great to see how enthusiastic he still is. I’ve just seen it for years on the TV.

“But we really enjoy working with him. He’s a brilliant role model, in his self-belief, in his positivity. I just hope we can continue on the right path with him so he can give us what he can give.”If Vardy continues at his current scoring rate and plays in every game this season, he will get 11 more goals to finish on 14 for the campaign. That would put him level with Michael Owen on 150 Premier League goals. The former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker infamously said in 2016 that Vardy “wasn’t convincing me as a natural finisher” and that to be successful with his style of shooting, “you need a lot of luck”.
