Wolves loanee Hugo Bueno made his Champions League debut for Feyenoord in their 3-2 win over Girona.

While the Old Gold are struggling back in Wolverhampton, Bueno lived his dream by returning to his homeland to play a part in Feyenoord’s away win.

The left-back wouldn’t have thought about making his Champions League debut this time last season however, the Spaniard’s dream came true as he started for his loan club.

In an action-packed game that ended 3-2 to the visitors, Bueno’s side picked up a win as the Wolves defender made his European debut.

After making his debut for Feyenoord at the start of the season, Bueno missed several games due to injury, delaying his chance to impress.

That didn’t matter though, as after returning on match day seven of the Eredivisie, Brian Priske named the Wolves defender in his starting XI to face Girona.

In a match that saw two own goals scored, a penalty miss, five goals and nine yellow cards, Bueno played 71 minutes, seeing Dutch media react to his display.

The focus of the media ratings seemed to be on the left-back’s role in Girona’s opening goal, with Voetbal Primeur accusing the Spaniard of not ‘adequately’ intervening.

“A scissor here, a step there: Bueno is not afraid to seek out his opponent. However, he is initially deployed to defend and the Spaniard often has trouble with that. He did not intervene adequately in the opening goal.”

As a result, the outlet handed the Wolves loanee a 5.5 match rating, which contrasted the impressive 7.8 rating Voetbal Flitsen awarded him.

Voetbal Flitsen ranked Bueno as Feyenoord’s third-best performer on the night, despite his failure to clear the danger in Girona’s first goal.

The defender was awarded a 6/10 rating from Voetbal Zone, who also picked up on the fullback’s role in the first goal of the game.

“Not everything went wrong, but he played a somewhat unfortunate role in the 1-0, when he got the ball against him after a corner and was unable to clear the ball. David Lopez then scored.”

Wolves will be watching Bueno closely

Out of the players who left Wolves on loan in the summer, Bueno is the most senior, being a firm part of Gary O’Neil’s first team.

The Spaniard went on loan to seek game time, which seems to have been the right choice given the faith that Priske has in the player at Feyenoord.

Bueno’s Champions League debut marked a special night for the defender and most importantly, handed Wolves another chance to scout his development.

It’s integral that the Spaniard has a strong season at Feyenoord, whether it be to return and be re-integrated into O’Neil’s side or, to be sold on for a worthy price.
