Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer left in awe of £16m Tottenham player in 3-0 win over Man United

Whether Bruno Fernandes stayed on the pitch or not, Tottenham Hotspur always looked like winning against Manchester United, three points the visitors arguably wanted more.

Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer respond to criticism following controversial BBC interview with Erik ten Hag

Ange Postecoglou masterminded a crucial win for Tottenham, the kind of game which was never going to be a dull affair – two sides who are very much ‘all or nothing’.

On this occasion, United really did offer nothing, an alarming reality check for how little progress the club are making under Erik ten Hag despite their investment in his plans.

Of course, every penny spent under Postecoglou in N17 to date looks like it will eventually pay off.

Question marks have been raised over the fee paid to bring Brennan Johnson to Spurs, but he’s now proving a point on the pitch.

Similarly, there were some premature judgments heading in Dominic Solanke’s direction after just 180 minutes in a Tottenham shirt, another player who scored at Old Trafford.

Rodrigo Bentancur praised for ‘really clever’ Tottenham performance

That being said, it was a player who arrived at Tottenham before Postecoglou who both Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer were praising on ‘The Rest Is Football’ podcast.

The duo took a moment to speak about Rodrigo Bentancur’s performance against United, a player who isn’t always at the forefront of praise.

Tottenham signed Bentancur for £16m back in 2022, and Postecoglou is now often using the 27-year-old as a single-pivot in midfield, effectively playing behind five attackers.

Speaking on the podcast, Lineker said: “Bentancur is a player, he is a lovely player. I know he’s had his injury problems over the last couple of years, but in terms of in that sitting role there, he’s just so calm.

“He’s so good on the ball, so comfortable isn’t he in possession?”

Shearer replied: “He’s a really clever one, intelligent. It was a really good game from him. He played it really well.”

Mikey Moore ready for his Tottenham chance

Of course, one of the other enjoyable sub-plots at Old Trafford was Mikey Moore receiving another chance in a Tottenham shirt.

Timo Werner was failing to take his chances during the 3-0 win, one he could have turned into a rout.

That being said, after Werner missed again one-versus-one in the second half, Tottenham fans started singing Moore’s name, seemingly requesting that he replace the German.

Perhaps that’s a little harsh on Werner, he was still doing a lot right, but Moore did justify the hype when he came on, nearly scoring an outrageous goal late on.

An excellent evening for Spurs, who will be targeting two more wins before the international break.
