REPORT: Fans underestimated the Bills team after a lot of key players left
After three back-to-back dominant performances, the Buffalo Bills are rightly recognized as a top team in the NFL. Fans underestimated the Bills team after a lot of key players left. However, the Bills are now 3-0 for the first time since 2020 and have already recorded some dominating performances.
The Bills’ offense seems to have gotten better, even after the departure of Diggs and Davis, as the offense leads the entire league in points scored, averaging 37.3 points, and scoring 14 touchdowns. The defense has also been dominant, especially the defensive line, as Von Miller and Greg Rousseau combined for six sacks. This helped the defense allow only four touchdowns on the year.
Now the Bills will get put to the test, as they’re facing a Ravens team desperate to get back on track as they hold a 1-2 record. Everyone knows the talent this team withholds, and players and coaches know that. Many talented players on that team can take over a game and make life harder for their opposing team.
Lamar Jackson
This one is obvious and shouldn’t be a surprise. Lamar Jackson is arguably a top-three quarterback in the league and has generational talent. The two-time MVP is one of, if not the best scrambler in NFL history with a good arm and accuracy.
However, Jackson is most effective on the ground rather than through the air. Bills linebackers and edge rushers must do everything to keep Jackson in the pocket. Jackson thrives on creating plays with his feet, and if the Bills’ defense can prevent that from occurring and making Jackson feel uncomfortable, they have a good chance at winning.
Derrick Henry
The 6’3 ft, 250 lb running back may be 30 years old, but he is still a dangerous player. Henry has had a Hall-of-Fame career, continuing that legacy with a contending Ravens team. Even at 30 years old, Henry still shows why he’s one of the best runners in the league, especially after 151 yards and two touchdowns against the Cowboys.
Linebackers should step up and key in on the all-pro running back, as Henry is best at trucking defenders and breaking tackles. The front seven need to make sure Henry doesn’t get a full head of steam, as he can easily take over a game.
Roquan Smith
Smith is one of the more overlooked players on the Ravens team, which is a bit of a surprise considering he’s by far the best player on that defense. Fans could make a case for Kyle Hamilton, but Smith is the heart and soul of that defense.
The Ravens’ defense has been disappointing this year, as the team hired a new defensive coordinator, but Smith has been one of the more consistent parts.
Smith is good in pass coverage and an elite run-stopper, and the Bills need to contain him. The Bills’ offensive line has been superb so far, and they need to keep it up this game, especially with blocking at the second level and keeping Roquan Smith from making game-changing plays.
The Bills should also watch Smith in certain blitz packages, as he can pressure a quarterback one-on-one with a blocker. The offense should also try to be a step ahead of Smith and outsmart him. Joe Brady should continue to amplify the run game stunt Smith with some play actions and always keep the player guessing.
