Nottingham Forest were desperate to sign a striker during the January transfer window and looked at a number of options.

Ultimately, the club chose not to sign a talisman, with Nuno Espirito Santo advising Evangelos Marinakis that he was happy with his options.

Eddie Nketiah was one of the options that Forest tried to sign but he chose Crystal Palace after a chat with Oliver Glasner.

Elsewhere, Omar Marmoush was looked at but Forest suffered a devastating blow on the £28 million player on transfer deadline day.

The main Forest target throughout the summer window was Santiago Gimenez – but he rejected the club on a couple of occasions it seemed.

Now, the three main targets are playing with their respective clubs hoping to leave Forest gutted that they didn’t manage to bring them to the City Ground.

For one of them, however, things have taken a turn for the worse…

Santiago Gimenez picks up serious injury

Gimenez had seemingly remained with Feyenoord to play Champions League football with the club where he’s been put on a very high pedestal.

Nuno Espirito Santo held talks with Gimenez over a move to Forest but after appearing close at one point, nothing came to fruition.

Now, disaster has struck. According to beIN Sports, the 23-year-old talisman will now be out injured for three months after being stretchered off against NAC Breda.

It’s a thigh injury that Gimenez has been struck down with and three months looks like the minimum time it will take him to recover.

Forest are in a perilous situation themselves. Chris Wood and Taiwo Awoniyi are the two main strikers and an injury to either of those players would leave the team very short.

Forest surely won’t return for Gimenez in January

This injury surely scuppers any chance that Gimenez had of Forest going back in for him during January.

Three moths will see him sidelined until late December and then he will have to prove his fitness and won’t have played for such a long period of time.

Last season, Gimenez scored 26 goals in the Eredivisie and it’s no surprise that Forest wanted to target a player of that magnitude.

Now, however, he might be left wondering what might have been with Champions League football now looking like finishing for Gimenez after one game – a thrashing at the hands of Bayer Leverkusen.

The talented striker will surely bounce back but in the meantime, Forest will almost certainly go in search of other strikers for the forthcoming transfer windows.
