SPURS TRADE: Big Time Target $80 Million San Antonio Spurs Star

The Chicago Bulls could target the $80 million San Antonio Spurs star as part of a Zach LaVine trade.

The Chicago Bulls are looking to rebuild and have already said goodbye to DeMar DeRozan and Alex Caruso. It is believed that they are also looking to trade Zach LaVine. LaVine signed a five-year, $215 million contract in 2022. That deal has become a major problem for the Bulls.

LaVine has faced injury problems in recent times, playing only 25 games last season. That, combined with his massive contract, has had a negative effect on his trade value.

Trading LaVine would solidify a new direction for the Bulls. It may provide more opportunities for younger players and promote a more balanced team dynamic, given the underperformance of the current roster. In fact, one could argue that this rebuild should have started a year or two earlier.

In the Bleacher Report article ‘Imagining Every NBA Team’s Top 3 Trade Targets’, Keldon Johnson of the San Antonio Spurs has been suggested for the Bulls. It would see LaVine head in the opposite direction. Greg Swartz wrote: “The Spurs are one of the few franchises that could reasonably take on LaVine’s remaining money, given that his massive contract runs the same length of time as Victor Wembanyama’s rookie deal.

“If this happens, Johnson would almost certainly be one of the players coming back to Chicago, and fills a need as a young, versatile forward who can score and make plays for others.” Johnson would fit the vision for the future that the Bulls seemingly have for themselves at this point in time. The Bulls seem to be seeking to inject energy and freshness into their squad, and Johnson would bring just that.

He has a ton of potential offensively. He averaged 22.0 points per game in the 22-23 season. That number did drop to 15.7 PPG last season, which might be a cause for worry. On the other hand, LaVine is still a fantastic player when healthy. Adding one of the most dynamic scorers in the league with the Rookie of the Year, Victor Wembanyama, might be a recipe for success for the Spurs.
